First, I stopped dreaming…

Sheila and I had just returned from a great trip to Egypt and Jordan when we found out that she has stage 3b non-small cell lung cancer. What a shock!!!! She’s never smoked, works out, plays tennis almost every week, eats yogurt, nuts, fruit and probably has 4 percent body fat.

I’ve found that since we’ve gotten the news that I don’t dream at night anymore. Before now I was the typical speed reader on any articles dealing with cancer. Unless it was prostate related. As a man, that hits close to home. Plus it runs in the family, so I have a special interest.

But like most people who find out that a loved one is now sick I was initially paralyzed and overwhelmed with what to do, how to help, what would this all mean….

Plus we’re supposed to get married in June. We had just signed the contract for the wedding location. And the photographer.  Now what? I told her that I wanted to marry her no matter what, so if we even have to go to the courthouse and have a civil wedding, then so be it. We can always do the bigger wedding. I just want to be her husband. She’s absolutely the best person. Very sweet, loving and fun to be with. We do so much and have so much left to do.

Together we’ll get through this. This coming week we have the PET scan, another pulmonary scan, and then meetings with the medical oncologist and the radiation oncologist. We’ve also put in for second opinion meetings with specialists at UCSD.
