ER 8-30-09

It’s about 8:20am, and we’ve been here since 5am.

We went to bed around 10:30pm, but she was up and down most of the night barfing. So at 3:45am, while she was curled up on the bathroom floor in  the master bedroom begging for relief, we decided it was time to head to the ER.

She hasn’t been able to keep much down for almost three days, and we’re afraid she’s getting dehydrated. Her weight of 111 pounds is scary, and I can’t do anything at the moment to get fat into her. Even the shake I got her yesterday didn’t stay down. She looks so frail and spindly. Plus the radiation and chemo have really trashed the roof and gums of her mouth, so that makes eating anything of substance very painful.

They’re running tests and giving her fluids. X-rays of her stomach came back fine. The adivan they gave her through an IV seems to be working. She hasn’t had the urge to barf for a couple of hours now. But it makes her babble and see things that aren’t there.

I’ve noticed that when she gets like this – disoriented and incoherent – that she talks a lot about things she and her sisters did as kids. Games they played. Faces they made at each other. She often talks about a field that she and Karen played in or walked across.

Well, they’re ordering oatmeal to see if she can eat that and keep it down. Fingers crossed.

  1. hi Ken, so sorry to hear Sheila is in the hospital again. Please check out my husband also could not keep down anything and than his throat swelled to an opening the size of a straw. the only thing he could keep down was the very high calorie breakfast drink, breeze, and benacalorie. Read the testamonials and ask your nutritionalist. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.
